I'll be the first to admit when I looked at the Sewell website and found the adapter I thought I needed, I failed to read the note about it not working on HP laptops with model designation 9000. My specific model is dv9727us.

True to form it didn't work right away. I contacted HP support in hopes they had an update to the BIOS. There reply is below for flashing the BIOS, but the key thing they said it should work in fact they were recommending Sewell Direct products not the product I bought but the company just the same. What follows is my response to HP after I figured out how to make it work.

Dear HP Support,

Thanks for the information. Initially, it didn’t make a difference( Mind you I had no instructions with the switch I bought an “Open Box” item). It was at that point I noticed an A-B switch on the SW-7429 Duel Adapter sold by Sewell Direct. It was in the “B” position. I moved it to the “A” position. The computer began to recognize the adapters presence. I was able to then able to use the PCMCIA card I had. This handling of the A-B switch may have been in the instructions of an "Unopened Box" but I don't have that information.
Thought you might be interested in what I discovered.

Dear Douglas,
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
In reviewing I understand that you have bought an Express Card to PCMCIA Adapter but you were told that the card slot does not recognize it because of some limitation in the HP BIOS set-up for the card slot.
Please be informed that, Express to PCMCIA converter, can be used to connect the PCMCIA card and it will be recognized.
However, if it is not recognized, then, I recommend you to reset BIOS to defaults and then update BIOS.
To reset BIOS, I recommend you to perform the following steps :
1. Turn on the computer.
2. Keep tapping  the F10  key when the Compaq logo appears.  This will take you to BIOS Setup Utility.
3. Press F9 to  "Set Defaults and Exit".
4. Press F10 to "Save and Exit" the BIOS.
5. Click on Ok/Yes to confirm the changes.
6. Restart the computer.
Now, the BIOS will be set to default settings.
Now, I recommend you to download and install the BIOS update from the following link :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38368.exe

 Installation Instructions :
1. Download the SoftPaq .EXE file to a directory on your hard drive.
2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.

I would like to inform you that, you can also obtain USB to PCMCIA converter and connect the PCMCIA card.
To obtain USB to PCMCIA converter, I recommend you to contact your nearest reseller.
For your convenience, I am providing the following website for reference on USB to PCMCIA converter :

problem description : I have PCMCIA card for Wireless communication. The computer has an Express Cardslot only. I bought an Express Card to PCMCIA Adapter from Sewell Direct Product number SW-7429. For some reason they say your card slot does not recognize it because of some limiation in the HP BIOS set-up for the card slot. This is exactly why I did not buy an HP computer before this date. I had hoped HP had gotten beyond this. Do you have a download that can get make this slot like other manufacturers, manufactures who seem to have no problem letting the express slot handle PCMCIA card put through an adapter.
