This is really cool in my opinion.  Microsoft will soon be bringing what they call "Surface" to major hotels, stores an restaurants. Grin  Touch screen ordering of food at a restaurant sounds nice to me.

Quote
"With Surface, we are creating more intuitive ways for people to interact with technology," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "We see this as a multibillion dollar category, and we envision a time when surface computing technologies will be pervasive, from tabletops and counters to the hallway mirror. Surface is the first step in realizing that vision."

Microsoft Plans to Revolutionize Interface Technology With "Surface"

Quote
In its current form, Surface is incorporated into a 30" display mounted into a table. This allows user involvement to expand beyond just one person. Surface is capable of recognizing input from not just one finger, but up to dozens of inputs simultaneously.

This technology isn’t exactly new as Apple uses a less complex version on its iPhone and “multi-touch” technology was demonstrated by Jeff Han to much fanfare last year. Microsoft, however, is bringing multi-touch to the masses.

Users can perform tasks such as browsing through pictures and music files by simply using their fingers. For users operating Surface in restaurants, a simple touch of the screen could allow you to order a beverage during a meal.

Surface also has the ability to read bar codes on items to provide further information to the user. "This means that when a customer simply sets a wine glass on the surface of a table, a restaurant could provide them with information about the wine they’re ordering, pictures of the vineyard it came from and suggested food pairings tailored to that evening’s menu," said Microsoft. "The experience could become completely immersive, letting users access information on the wine-growing region and even look at recommended hotels and plan a trip without leaving the table."

Surface will first be available at Harrah’s Entertainment properties, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts and T-Mobile retail stores.

Looks like Ralph Lauren will now have their own touch screen shopping. Grin

Ralph Lauren unveils "touch-sensitive window shopping" in London
Quote
Alright, the whole touchscreen thing is getting a little out of hand. In the latest example of touch-frenzy, luxe clothier Ralph Lauren is converting a large window at its London flagship store into a giant touchscreen shopping experience as part of its Wimbledon marketing campaign

Hey I remember this one... Sean Bean has a surface desk, Ewan Mcgreggor colors on it, then sean sticks a bunch of nano bots in ewan's eye.

Great show.

 Wink

Seriously I think this is a cool technology.  I'll watch this one closely.

So the two finger image resizing thing is cool, but it works about the same as the iPhone.

I wonder who came up with it first--The idea I don't think anyone can take credit for...I'm curious though if any fanboys know who came up with a working implementation, and how they both came out so (relatively) closely.

Those things could seriously change the way we do a lot of things.  If they can get these technologies super integrated into a wide range of third party devices there is so much they could do with it.  I need one in my kitchen, with all my ingredients tagged so that it will just tell me what i can make from what i have.  While it streams a movie from my Creative Zen and shows me all my RSS feeds while i'm cooking.  Now that'd be rad.

P.S. Tikiman, your pictures are broke like a joke.

I walked through the room and there was a new technology demo on one of those morning news shows (Good Morning America-esque) and they were demoing a surface desk... It didn't work.  It woke up, but wouldn't load into the screen he was trying to get to.

They handled it really well, they didn't make a big deal about it, and it cut to a pre-recorded scene of someone using it, but when it got back he still didn't have it working.

There is always hickups in new technology... it's just funny when demos wont run.  (Pretty common with microsoft I guess)
