I am trying to reinstall a Lexmark printer on a laptop that has a shorted-out onboard USB port. I installed a PCMCIA USB card (Adaptec AUA 1420A). I do not have orig Printer install disk but it is Plug and Play in XP. I deleted the printer and reinstalled it. Apparently the default printer setup is for the original USB port. I can not seem to redirect the printer to another USB port. Creating one does not seem to work. Is there a proper procedure to do this?

The simplest solution should be to uninstall the printer entirely, then connect it directly to the PCMCIA USB ports.  Windows should automatically install the printer to that (new) port.

Most often, it doesn't matter which USB port you connect to, however there are some printer drivers that can be picky.
