For all of you J.K Rowling fans out there! Grin

J.K. Rowling has been spotted at cafes in Scotland working on a detective novel, a British newspaper reported Saturday.

The Sunday Times newspaper quoted Ian Rankin, a fellow author and neighbor of Rowling's, as saying the creator of the "Harry Potter" books is turning to crime fiction.

"My wife spotted her writing her Edinburgh criminal detective novel," the newspaper, which was available late Saturday, quoted Rankin as telling a reporter at an Edinburgh literary festival.

"It is great that she has not abandoned writing or Edinburgh cafes," said Rankin, who is known for his own police novels set in the historic Scottish city.

I really like the Harry Potter books and if she really is writing another book I bet she will make bank off of it just because people will want to see if it is as good as Harry Potter.  Hey, and if it flops who cares she's already set for life.

I'm interested in seeing what she does with the rest of her writing career. Orson Scott Card's review of "Deathly Hallows" includes a section addressing Rowling's probable future.

Quote
Here are my predictions:

1. She will take years writing her first "adult" novel (because she probably believes what the elitists believe, that Harry Potter was somehow of a lesser breed because it was written in such a way as to include children in its audience).

When it comes out, it will be received with condescension by the critics. This will bother Rowling more than she is prepared, right now, to believe (right now she thinks she doesn't care). She will try again, and this second one will be savaged.

Read the rest here:
http://www.hatrack.com/osc/reviews/everything/2007-07-29-extra.shtml

The whole thing is worth a read, but the prediction starts close to the end of the article.

It will be interesting to see if she does another set of books, rather than a set of books. Whatever it is, I'm sure it will sell like golden hotcakes.

My bad. I meant a set, rather than just one inclusive book. So, do I get anything for being a spammer? Maybe a case of spam?

This would be a pretty major genre jump.  She must not like people thinking she just got lucky with Harry Potter, and wants to prove her versatility.  However Harry Potter did have quite a few themes that involved a mystery that needed investigating, so maybe it is not that far of a jump after all.  I was never very impressed with Rowling's magical world- there wasn't very much depth to it.

You said you didn't like the books right? You prefer the movies? There was more depth in those books than in MANY other books I've read. It will be really interesting to see how other genres turn out for her.

I read book 1, and when i wasn't very impressed I stopped.  Then I read 6 and 7 shortly after the 5th movie came out.  I was much more impressed with 6 and 7, and read both of them in less than 4 days combined.  I'm rating this as a fantasy novel, which I've read my fair share of.  There is no doubt it was a good read, but there are still many better books out there in the fantasy genre, and maybe it is because I like fantasy books that I am left unimpressed.  I think the mass market doesn't like fantasy very often, so this was toned-down enough to their liking.

I have a theory about J.K. Some of you may be extremely offended by this theory. I've been studying for the GRE for the last few months using Kaplan's GRE word flipbook. It's a 500 word vocabular builder. While I've been memorizing these words, I've also been reading 5, 6 and 7 of the Harry Potter series. A lot of the more advanced words she uses are found in the Gre flip book. I havent read the earlier Harry Potter books to see if she is using them there, but I seem to recall the vocabulary in the earlier books being more simple. My theory is that J.K's vocab has been built by Kaplan. And that isnt a bad thing. It is just an observation, as we know she hasnt had much experience with writing in the first place. At any rate, she be a good writer.

Maybe she just has an extensive vocabulary....who knows? There are a TON of words and names that refer to Roman mythology. It's really neat once you can pick them all out.

I meant in Harry Potter there are lots of Roman mythological words....just for clarification.

I guess that doesn't say much for your writing experience.
