I have a PCMCIA wireless phone/data card.  I recently purchased an HP dv9207us lappy that's equipped with a 54mm Express Card slot.  I'm looking for an adapter so I can continue to use my PCMCIA wireless phone/data card in my new lappy.

Came across Duel's adapter in the Sewell site - now it says under System Requirements "NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE HP (and Compaq) 6000 AND 9000 LAPTOPS"

Is this correct?

Thanks.

First off welcome to the forums paj4x4! Grin

Unfortunately for the time being this is correct about the HP 6000 and 9000 series laptops.  The issue is actually due to the BIOS on these HP Laptop motherboards.  Duel Systems has been working with HP for a fix, but currently a solution has still not been released.

Hopefully a new BIOS will come down the pipe from HP soon so that this issue can be resolved.  Until then you can look into solutions like the USB to 32-Bit Card Bus.

By the way what type of phone/data card do you have?

Thanks for the welcome TiKiMaN1.

I have the ZTE wireless phone/data card from Reliance Communication (CDMA) India.  Not sure if its 16 or 32 bit...I'll check the specs in the manual shortly.

Speed will be slower on the USB to 32 bit Card Bus adapter right?  If yes I'll most likely wait for HP and Duel to sort this issue out to make it run on HP's 6000 and 9000 series.

Common HP!

The main downside of the USB adapter is not speed because it still runs faster than any cellular internet connection, but rather that it only works with the cards listed on the supported cards list.

I had a PCMCIA card with my old laptop then I purchased a hp dv9000 and of course I couldn't use the card anymore.  Therefore, I bought the Falcom Samba 75 and put the SIM card from my PCMCIA into the falcom.  But it runs so slow and it's making me miserable.  Why does it run so slow if it's the same service?  I need a resolution and since I paid close to $300 for the device I would like to find a way to continue to use it.  Any and all advice is welcome and needed!  Thanks!

Depending on how it is setup you may be able to access the modem or the connection properties and increase the maximum allowed connection speed.  This can often increase the speed of your connection.

If you check under the network connections menu in the control panel it may list your connection through the samba, depending on how you have it set up.  If you do have that connection there, right click on it and click properties.  Then click configure button under the modem section and under the maximum speed choose the highest available option.  That will keep windows from limiting your speed on that connection.

If you're still having trouble it might be a good idea to contact the manufacturer, falcom.  You can reach them by phone in the US at 1-818-998-9818.

Jonathan.......thanks so much for your advice it was a god send.  My system is running much faster because I switched the speed to the max of 921600 bps and also switched the modem protocol from Analog to GPRS (was that the right thing to do?). Nonetheless,  I'm not a computer oriented person when it comes to troubleshooting so your help has truly been a blessing and has enabled me to use a device I was ready to throw out the window.  Thanks for your help!

Yes we are looking more into the issue with Toshiba latops.  It is possible that Toshiba motherboards suffer from the same issue HP mothboards do.  If you would like to return the product you may call us at 1-800-709-1345.

By the way is this the Toshiba Satellite 205?

Another issue we have seen is the Sony Ericson cards are really difficult to accommodate.  Of all the different options we have for aircards, only this and one other ever work with the Sony cards.

Since the express card technology is still new, it doesn't have all of the bug worked out.  I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't figured out the best way to run the Sony cards.

I was really happy when you first told me how to change the settings of my Samba and I thought it was working faster.  Unfortunately, it's not.  I was out of town last week and needed to use the internet on my laptop.  Just to download my email messages took at least 2 hours and I had less than 30 messages.  I had to totally forget about connecting to links............please help!  I desperately need an air card and right now I'm wasting time and money using this device so I hope you can help me resolve this issue.

While you were out of town, were you in an area where you didn't have as strong of a signal, or were you roaming?

Sometimes when you're in a different city than your provider originally sold the sim card for you may get slown down to a slower connection.  Now that you are back in town is it working any faster?

Hello,

I have purchased a HP dv6358se laptop and wish to use my old 3Com EtherLink III LAN PC Card (for 10Base-T and coax) pcmcia card (3C589D-COMBO). I understand that my bios does not allow the Express Card to PCMCIA Adapter solution, but will the USB PCMCIA Adapter work? Or... any other suggestion how to connect my new laptop to a COAX network?

Thanks,

Ron,

Unfortunately the USB adapters only work with a few specific cards.  They are specifically designed to work with air cards, howerver there have been a few cards that coincidentally work using the same functionality as the air cards.   Support is really hit and miss--all you can really do is try to plug in the adapter and see if it works.

Untill HP releases a Bios update that fixes the problem, that's about all you can do.  (unless you can find a similar combocard using expresscard technology)
