HP 4L

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525 (laptop) with Windows Vista. I and am trying to install a HP 4L laser printer using the USB to parallel cable. (I also have an Epson Stylus C80 printer (USB) which installed with no problems.) I connected the USB cable to the laptop first and then to the printer. I installed the drivers by by adding a printer in Windows. The printer was added and I can see it in my printer list, but cannot print using the laser. I have no problems printing with the Epson printer. What am I doing wrong.
