I purchased a two port USB PCMCIA card from you and it does not work on my Pentium 4 DELL C640 laptop. Every time I plug in the card, it powers off the laptop. It is running Windows XP SP2.

The card works fine however on my new DELL D610, which also runs XP SP2.

What is the problem with your card that makes it power off a laptop???

I need it work on the C640, since it only has one 1.1 USB port on back.

Please HELP.  Thanks. If it cannot work on the C640, what card do you have that does??

Have you tested other cards in the C640 laptop?  If something in your PCMCIA slot is shorting out, it could cause the laptop to shut down.  Occasionally there will be compatibility issues that can cause a shutdown, but usually you will get some warning (even if it is just a blue-screen error message)

You might also want to try checking on Dell's website for updated drivers for your motherboard chipset and the PCMCIA slot.  That might help if it is a compatibility issue.

Yes, I did try other cards: a Sprint PCS wireless card works fine and so does a old Megahertz modem card.
So, I ruled out that it was the PCMCIA slots.

Also, I have the latest DELL BIOS and DELL drivers loaded.

If you connect the card with the laptop off, then start the computer, does it work?  PCMCIA should be hot swapable, but maybe an error is being thrown during the initialization.

Yes, I tried that. The system will power up with the card inserted, but during the boot process when the system detects the card, it powers off immediately.  There are no errors in the event logs.

AJ is having the same symptoms (as "me") with the PCMCIA Cardbus for USB2.0 expansion as well, also on XP SP2 in two different Toshiba laptops.  Slots are good, and same power off installation and attempt to detect and boot issue seen here as well.

Current Tosh Satellites are:
A105 and S273 (older model than A105).  Tested slots with NETGEAR 511T card, and works fine.

Looks, feels, sounds like a duck (bad HW) to me.   Unless you have some pretty good (new) tips, please GA pass this one through to Customer Service for an RMA, if needed.  It just arrived in todays USPS, so a quick disposition seems appropriate.

I apologize for the troulbe you've had with that device.  If you would like to return it you'll need to contact Technical support at 1-800-709-1345 or by email at support@sewelldirect.com.

They can authorize your product for return and give you instructions on how to do that.
