I have a Vastor SKU: 99680 adaptor recently purchased from Sewell, to use for temporary access in a 3.5" FireWire drive enclosure.  The IDE cable pulled from that 3.5" drive enclosure is one with a center female socket filled on each end.  That's fine on the enclosure end, but the 2.5" adaptor cable has all 40 male pins, so....

Is there any "special" female to female 40 pin IDE cable I need to attach the adaptor cable to the enclosure?  I don't want to gamble with a new drive and healthy enclosure by using an improper cable.

Unless i'm misunderstanding the way you're trying to do things, you shouldn't need any other cable.    The 3.5" drive enclosure should have a short ide cable in it that would normally go direct to the 3.5" drive.  That adapter can plug directly into that ide cable since it has a male 3.5" connector and the cables are female.   Then the 2.5" HDs have male connections on them.  The adapter's 2.5" side is female and should be able to plug directly into the HD.

Is there something i'm missing about the adapter?  It should be male on the 3.5" side and female on the 2.5" side.

Yes when you try and plug it into a ide cable, the ide cable has a pin hole blocked but the adaptor is not missing a pin.   If you plug it in wrong you could put the power side backwards..  And then bad things could happen.   ..

A lot of those cables that have a pin blocked out just have a rubber filler in the hole.  On the cable included, does it look like that may be the case?  If it is you can usually just use a sharp pin to poke it and remove the block.   If it doesn't have a removable block you may need to get a different cable.

On the adapter there is a marking on one side that has the number 1 and a small arrow.  This is marking the side of the connection that refers to pin 1.  On your cable there should be one side that has a red, or other dark color, line down it.  That side of the cable is also pin 1.  So you'll need a cable that doesn't have a block, then just match pin 1 to pin 1 and you should be set.
