I had problem w/ a minolta.  The only connection it will work on is the parent usb port on the computer.  Pissed me off as Minolta knew it and the net price after rebate was $50. at Staples.  Try to just move the connection to the parent port and make sure you have the updated drivers installed.

If you check in the windows device manager, is the I/O controller card listed as installed properly?  What LPT port is it assigned to?  What port is your printer assigned to use?

Especially with Multi-IO controllers the installation can be a pain.  If you get a 3 port card, you will likely need to go through the add hardware wizard four times.  Once for the controller, and once for each port (Com1, Com2, Com3, LPT1 etc.)

If you have to add in there the windows logo testing dialog, and some manual driver searching, it can be a pretty big ordeal.

Again, check that the port is installed correctly (Multi IO cards usually start with LPT3) and that the printer is assigned to that port.

Also check for updated drivers from HP.
