There are a lot of good brands out there.  The two that i have been most impressed by for being good monitors and still a good price are viewsonic and samsung.  Samsung has some great monitors that are rated at a 3000:1 contrast ratio with a 2ms response time.  They really have a great picture.  The viewsonic monitors don't always have quite as nice of a picture, but are very affordable.  They do still have a good picture, better than a lot of monitors out there from what i've seen.

For that i would go with the samsung.  They've got a great bright picture with high contrast.  Just look for the models that are listed with the 3000:1 contrast ratio.
